Indeed. With DoD (and I presume with other departments), this type
of restriction can affect contractors as well as government users--
it's not just government purchases that will be affected if there are
no "no camera" configurations available, since we contractors must
abide by the restrictions of whatever facility we are using.
Outside of federal facilities, it's still an issue. You can't take
cameras into many courthouses (last time I visited the one in
Fairfax, I had to surrender my phone--surrendering my laptop would
have been extremely annoying).
It's even true for purely commercial users. Equinix, for example,
prohibits cameras in its EBX data centers. Now, they don't do bag
inspections in my experience, but if it becomes general knowledge
that "all Macs have cameras", I can foresee a new question: "is that
laptop a Mac? I need to see it, please..."
That said, since the MacBooks aren't shipping yet, and there are
still no-camera laptops for sale from Apple, there is still a bit of
time to work a solution, but I'd like to echo Peter's emphasis that
it's not just a DOE problem. Ian, what can those of us who would be
affected do to help you paint a picture for Apple management?
