If the CAC reader firmware has been updated for the MAC side to read the CAC reader just leave it disconnected when starting parallels. Once Parallels PC has booted up then reconnect the CAC reader (make sure you have Parallels selected and not the MAC side. If you still get the Error message, disconnect CAC reader and wait about a minute then reconnect it. For CAC readers that don't have the firmware updated follow the same process and connect the CAC reader after parallels has booted the PC side up. Verify the CAC reader is selected in the USB controller (bottom right corner of Parallels window).

Subject: [Fed-Talk] Parallels and CAC
We are trying to get the CAC working with Windows XP running on Parallels,
but we are having problems getting Parallels to take control of the CAC
reader from Mac OS X. Typically, Windows XP does not see the CAC until we
select the CAC reader in the USB menu (Devices->USB->SCx31 USB Smart Card
Reader), but when we do this, Parallels says that the USB device is being
used by another process. To get around this, I go to Terminal and type
"sudo killall pcscd". After that, selecting the CAC reader in the USB menu
works and Windows XP sees the reader.
The problem comes after using the CAC in Windows XP. If I "unplug" the CAC
reader from Parallels using the USB menu, switch to Mac OS X, and then try
to use the CAC reader, the Mac OS ignores it. Not surprisingly, when I
check Activity Monitor (All Processes), the pcscd process is not running. I
restart the pcscd process by going to Terminal and typing "sudo pcscd", but
the Mac still does not see the CAC reader.
I'm looking for an easy way to "virtually" plug and unplug the CAC reader on
the Mac OS side of the equation. Is there a "right" way to stop and start
the pcscd process?
If anyone has any help with these questions or any suggestions for getting
the CAC to work with Parallels without crippling it on the Mac, I would
appreciate it.
Thanks,
Ruben
