Today I upgraded two Xserves from 10.3.9 to 104.7. One had been
primarily an ftp server, the other primarily served our web pages.
After upgrading, Apple saves you r existing /Library/Webservice
folder, and creates a new, bland one. In what follows, it is this
new ly created folder on each machine that I will be referring to, so
it will be clear the folders are identical and it is not a content
problem.
Everything went fine on the ftp server. In fact, I can go to Server
Admin, and using the default settings, which set up a no-name server
at "any" address, and can start web services just fine.
On the other machine, using the same set up, web services die on
launch. The message tells me to look at the error log, but nothing
appears to have been added to /var/log/httpd/error_log, The
system.log says somethiing on the order of a message from servermgrd
(spelling?) to the order that servermgrd_web could not launch httpd
(or something very close to that).
I am at a total loss as to what is causing it - but since all our web
content is on this machine, it has brought down our web pages. I
will re-emphasize that in both cases according to Server Admin I am
trying to start from /LIbrary/WebServices/Documents and in each case
it is the plain folder installed during the upgrade, and in each case
it is the no-name no address server that just brings up the one page.
It is about as vanilla as you can get.
Any tips on why web services will not launch, what to look for, or
things to try?
Things muchly, as this really has me stumped.
