My experience is that while the printers show up as "open directory"
printers there is no way to print to those published queues from a
mac. Two workarounds I've used sucessfully are:
1) Find the IP address and print to it via IPP or LPD.
2) If you are using an OS X Server, Map the printers as in 1 and
publish them out from the server. This way multiple users can browse
for them.

We've struggled with the same issue.
Here are some things I've found.
If I join my Mac to the domain using Apple's built-in Active
Directory plugin in Tiger, I still have the issue that I can only
browse the first 1885 items in our domain, which gets me slightly
into the "M"'s alphabetically. However, the print queues on our
three print servers (which I can't browse to) magically appear in
the Printer Browser as "Open Directory" printers.
However, I can't print to them. I get the "Unable to connect to
SAMBA host" error. This is when I'm logged in with a local account
on the Mac. I'll have to try using a network login. That's liable to
work.
However, at this point adding all our Macs to AD isn't an option
(though it may be in the next year or so).
On another machine, I've been able to set it up to authenticate to
an AD domain controller (DC) using the LDAPv3 connector (using
Active Directory mappings and what should be the correct Search
Base), rather than Active Directory. It requires my domain user
credentials to authenticate. That allows me to see the domain GAL in
my directory (like I can on the machine that's an AD member).
However, I'm not seeing the printer listing in the Printer Browser.
My assumption is that I'm missing some mapping in LDAP that is
present by default with AD binding. Anyone know what that is? I
suspect that being logged in with domain user credentials would
likely allow me to to print to the Windows shared printers.

Well, I still don't have an answer. I believe no one responded to
the list.
I know that there is a good chance AMFC will help, but I would like
someone
to comment on the limited list question. My default browser list
shows the
whole alphabet and all printers are shown as Open Directory.

In attempting to access servers or printers on the Windows
network, there
seems to be a limit on the number of items that the Mac OS will
display. I
am running 10.4.9 on an Intel Mac Pro, though the same situation
applied
with G5 Macs.
If I choose to add a printer in Printer Setup Utility, the Printer
Browser
comes up. Only the Adobe PDF 7.0 appears in the list. If I choose
to add
more printers, I choose Windows Printing and find my domain in the
Network
Neighborhood. Once the domain list comes up, it ends at names
beginning in
M. The same thing happens if I look for servers, using the Network
volume in
the Finder. Problem is, most of what I need, servers, or printers,
are
listed as supportsrv..., so I can never access them. Again, all
the Windows
network printers are on the server supportsrv2.
