Is there a way to totally remove the FTP program? (I know about
dropping into the trash, but is that all? Are there other system
settings that could have corrupted e-mail and internet?)
It would be helpful if you stated exactly which FTP program. Some
programs are just an application and mine their own business and
others install files elsewhere in the system. Easy way to tell is if
you can install the program in a folder in your user folder without
being an administrator then the program doesn't mess around with your
system. Programs like Adobe Reader for example can have far ranging
impact on your system.
Is there a way to reload just Mail and Safari from the Leopard CD or
must I reinstall the entire OS?
In theory yes you can load Mail and Safari, but it is not something I
would try as that would likely not solve the problem.
One likely possibility is that FTP program damaged an internet
settings file for your account, easy test is to create a second user
account and see if Safari works or not.
If the problem is limited to your account alone then even Archive and
Reinstall would not solve the problem, as the problem is buried in
your Library folder most certainly.
Also it is possible your DNS server is down, hard to be certain from
the limited details, could be the Windows machines cached the needed
info.
