OK - I just want to make sure that someone else doesn't misread this the way I did. I think what Michael is looking for and Shawn is saying is that you can't have an entire disk that's encrypted and use if for the Time Machine backup disk. However, you can certainly back up encrypted disk images using Time Machine. I keep most of the data on my laptop in several encrypted disk images and, while I haven't tried to restore them, if I look back in Time Machine it is making updated copies of the disk images. I also understand from a discussion elsewhere that if you use the Sparse Bundle disk images that they get backed up by Time Machine in small chunks (instead of having to back up who disk image each time).
