There's a difference between CAC support and AD integration. Apple
provides complete CAC support, but only basic AD integration (password
auth but not smartcard auth to AD, and no group policy support at all).
AD integration with group policy will likely always require third-party
software, but smartcard auth to AD may someday be natively supported.

However, remember that Windows OS does not do CAC either. The Army uses
the “Active Card Gold” package (and some companion software) to
implement that functionality. In addition, to electronically sign Army
forms or other documents (such as Defense Travel vouchers) with a CAC
you also need the “Approve It” software package (not a part of Windows
OS either).
Now, the Army does provide those software packages via the “Army Gold
Master (AGM)” distribution. And the Army is going to have an “AGM” for
Mac (later this year I am led to believe). It would be nice if the Army
would include some equivalent CAC software package like they do for the
Windows OS as an enterprise licensed package.

This is a grave insult that mac users have to pay an additional $60

Macs work with Common Access Card security
By Peter Cohen
Centrify’s DirectControl for Mac OS X enables Macs to work with
Microsoft Active Directory environments. Its newly announced
SmartCard Login Option enables those Macs to work with Department of
Defense (DoD) Common Access Cards (CACs) and other two-factor
authentication-based “smart cards.”
