Many of the federal users, esp the DOD ones, are familiar with the concept
of "gold disks". "gold disks" is the term used by many PMOs to describe the
standard software log their machines. I think it would be an interesting
exercise to see what are the most commons applications people installed on
their US GOV/DOD Macs and why. To reduce the size of the list let's assume
that large portion of Mac users have a large selection of Microsoft, Apple
and Adobe products installed.
my list:
PathFinder - group directories together, drop stack, compress
files/directories, tabs, and a robust find feature make Apple finder look
like a model T.
smcFanControl - Apple's default fan speeds for a MBP are ridiculously too
low
NeoOffice - ODF support, good mac integration, and it doesn't require X11
like openoffice
VLC - for all those audio/video format that QT doesn't support
FireFox - simply the best browser out there
GraphicConverter - its unfortunate apple stopped bundling this with the
intel macs
parallels - occasionally windows is required
cross over office - finally MS Project "natively" on my Mac.
google earth when combined with my Verizon ExpressCard - great for
directions on the rood.
symantec AV - to make those pesky IA folks happy, seems to work better on
intel macs that mcafee
Synk - great for syncing the contents of my encrypted DMGs with my servers
back at the office.
Juniper Network Connect - VPN support for Macs that work with CAC and
support my Verizon Express Card.
