When FileVault is enabled for a user account and a user is logging
out he will sometimes get the message asking to recover free space
(i.e. space in the sparseimage has been freed by deleting files).
I'm trying to write a shell script for a cron job that will logout
users and backup their FileVault sparseimage some other admin-only
directory to be backed off to a server later (almost all of our users
have PowerBooks|MacBooks that they take are generally offsite or
disconnected from the network when it's time for backups.). The
problem with the script arises when that popup message is
displayed...since there isn't a timeout on it, the machine will sit
at that prompt indefinitely never allowing the script to completely
logout the user cleanly.
Is there no way to enable a timeout for the message? If not, is
there a way to assume a yes or no answer by default and not present
the message at all?
Here are the reasons I want to backup this way if possible:
-No access to Windows file servers; SMB signing is being enforced and
has to stay that way
-No Mac servers
-No machine-based authentication to non-Windows file servers; file
transfers to non-Windows file servers have to be done interactively
by a user
-Most of our mac users don't have the admin|backup privleges to do
these things themselves
-We have too many users to purchase external backup media for each
person
-We can't get a Mac server (yet...), and-again-we can't dumb down the
(non-)Windows servers security-wise
-We can't get ADmitMac (yet...)
Anybody else been in this situation yet? I'm primarily a Windows
admin with some *nix experience, and I'm still trying to iron out all
the details of integrating these Macs as much as possible...
Thanks,
-Kerry
