I finally got around to reviewing the slides from the Apple Federal
Data Protection and Privacy brief that was given back in June. On
slide 18, "Encrypted Storage - Disk Images", it states that the images
are multi-platform, specifically calling out VMWare and FAT32.
Hopefully some of the smart folks here can answer some questions about
that:
1) If I FileVault my home directory, can VMWare still access it via
the built-in sharing? FileVault warns that it does not allow access
over (some?) network shares (I understand that this is different from
the encrypted disk image mentioned on the slide).
2a) If I have a FAT32-formated USB drive that I use on OS X, XP under
VMWare, and XP at work (NIPR), can I put an encrypted disk image on
that drive that I can use under all those platforms? Under Windows,
will I need to have additional drivers that will raise the ire of my
NOC?
2b) Can that disk image by made to be read/write, so I can mount it
and move files in and out, save to files, etc? If so, will it work
that way just on OS X, or on Windows too?
Thanks!
Dan
