Tim,
Thanks for the suggestion, tried it last night, the only permission that it
found incorrect was something with cups printing. Still gives me the same
error when the card reader is plugged in.
Any ideas on this are welcome,

Sounds like hotplug got it's priv bits messed up. Run a disk permission
repair (from Disk Utility) and see what happens.
