the last part is quite unfortunate. I wished it used OWA to query the addressbook (or list provided the option to).

Entourage does support SSO using Kerberos (and thus PKINIT) for OWA
authentication. Entourage also supports using PKI for authentication.
Entourage by itself does not require that a Macintosh be an Active Directory
domain member. When Entourage needs to locate information contained in
Active Directory, it does so using LDAP.
