Quite a story:
This is a really interesting talk given
by a guy named Ron Avitzur about a software application he spent years
developing.
- The application is called "Graphing
Calculator", and allows you to type in equations (like "y = sin(x)")
and instantly get a graph. But it's considerably more complex than
that -- it's 3D, you can do translations and rotations, etc. It's
a great tool for visualizing math and for teaching. But that's not
the interesting part of this talk.
- The tool runs on the Apple OS, and is
the first native application on the PowerPC. That means it was the
first program that really took advantage of the performance that the PowerPC
architecture provides. But that's not the interesting part of this
talk.
- The project was cancelled at Apple,
and the fact that this guy and a friend kept working on it for months --
without pay, without management supervision, and without official permission
to be at the Apple site -- that's the interesting part of this talk!
