Title: RE: [Fed-Talk] AppleCare on federal computers
A few months back, the ATI X1900XT graphics card in one of my users' Mac Pro started that overheating/freezing thing. We had purchased the extended AppleCare support for it rather than forking out more for a new graphics card. Although I was certain that the problem existed with the graphics card (it appears to be a recurring problem with the earlier X1900's based on forum postings), AppleCare didn't want to rule out something else as the culprit. That killed the "We'll just send a replacement card for you to install" option. As usual, they want you to bring it in to the nearest Apple Store.
I had three problems with that. We're ~450 miles from the nearest Apple Store, the closest authorized repair shop is over 60 miles away, but I've used them before and am not very impressed with the service. And, like most of you out there, I wasn't thrilled about going through the whole procedure of moving a gov't workstation off site.
The AppleCare rep understood the situation and scheduled an Apple-certified tech to make a house call, do a full system diagnostic scan, and replace the card on site. In this case, AppleCare "paid for itself", and I was pleased that Apple made the effort to send a tech rather than force me to do all the legwork to get the system repaired.
