Thank you Mr. Nelson!
I downloaded the AFC kit but only installed the CCID Driver Update
on my 10.5.1 iMac. I rebooted just as a precaution afterwards. Once
the OS came up I opened
the keychain utility under utilities and inserted my Oberthur CAC card
and it worked! I then opened
Safari up and proceeded directly to my facilities secured web site
(DoD PKI) and it worked just fine.
The only thing I am unable to get to work is the CAC card with
Firefox. I added the security device
as shown in articles on the net (the path to the smart card driver
though perhaps not the right one
now) and although the addition worked, it would not read the card. I
also tried the DoD Configuration
Tool plugin in firefox and that did not work either. I would really
appreciate any hints and tips on
getting your new updated driver working inside of FireFox.
Sincere Thanks,
Mike Bender

The BETA kit does have a "CCID Driver Update" package on it that
will fix
the Oberthur card problem. You don't need to install the AFC kit.
This
package is only intended as an UNSUPPORTED short term solution until
Apple
fixes the driver. I doubt this will be fixed in 10.5.2...
The patch installs a version that will just get overwritten by some
future
system update from Apple. You won't have to uninstall anything...

Hi Dave,
Thanks for that information! I'm hoping though that 10.5.2 fixes the
built-in
support since I'm really not too keen on purchasing software just to
be able
to read my CAC card

Hello,
Thursby has a new beta driver (http://www.thursby.com/beta/afc-beta.html
) that allows the new Oberthur cards to work with the SCR 331
readers. We have confirmed this works on both 10.5.1 and up to 9C16
of 10.5.2.
The one caveat was that after installing it did not ask to reboot
the system, and the card still did not work until after the system
was rebooted.
I can now sign, encrypt, and decrypt messages in Mail and use it
for CAC protected sites via Safari.
