Yeah, I understand the whole gsm/cdma thing... I was more making the Verizon comment because Tim was fed up with the crippling of features by the provider. Verizon's notorious for this...things like Bluetooth file transfer that are supposed to work straight from the manufacturer are disabled by Verizon, then they charge you to use the feature it should have had in the first place.
Personally, I think the wireless industry in the US has one of the biggest rackets going. The service itself is generally terrible compared to what is available elsewhere in the world, the policies the companies put in place on their customers are ludicrous and incredibly restrictive and I seem to be paying more for the same (or less) service than I did 10 years ago.

I should say that I do understand Verizon has crippled their software
images as well...but that "unlocking" doesn't really mean anything in
the context of Verizon, since "unlocked" handsets, in the sense that
we're talking about, would only be able to be used on GSM carriers.
And Verizon (and Sprint, etc.) are not GSM carriers.
