My experience is that lots of peripherals have bulky software installs ...
most of the bulk is an application or two that they give you that you may or
may not need (for a scanner, for instance, all I want is the driver for the
device and the TWAIN plugin for Photoshop).

I just had another amazingly pleasant experience with my MBP (already
outdated...sniff, sniff). I have an old Canoscan LIDE 35 scanner I've used
for years with Windows and wondered if I could run it off my MBP with Mac
drivers. Sure enough, in minutes I had downloaded the drivers, downloaded
the Toolkit program, and was scanning my little heart out (in fact, I had
done it twice because I accidentally installed the wrong versions of
both...both problems with the Canon site not Apple or the MBP).
My only question was that the drivers were as large, 16mb, as the program
itself. Is that common? Are all program drivers that large? I expected
something much smaller.
