One issue that I have had to consider lately is noise. Mac Mini's and
Mac Pro are quiet and Xserves are noisy, but from a spec point of view
the Mac Pro and Xserve are mostly the same.
But the Apple online store complete specs neglects noise; however, if
I look at 1 TB SATA-II hard drives I get the following specs:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 - acoustics (bels-sound power): idle 2.7,
seek: 2.9
Western Digital RE2-GP - acoustics: idle 24 dBA (ave), seek mode 0: 29
dBA (ave), seek mode 3: 25 dBA (ave)
Western Digital GP - acoustics: idle 25 dBA (ave), seek mode 0: 27 dBA
(ave), seek mode 3: 25 dBA (ave)
Hitachi Ultrastar A7K1000 - acoustics - A-weighted Sound power, Bels:
idle 2.9
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 - acoustics - A-weighted Sound power, idle 2.9
bels (typ), silent seek: 3.0 bels (typ), seek: 3.2 bels (typ)
Obviously there are issues with the way acoustic measurements are done
and presented, i.e. Bels vs. dBA.
It seems that it would be beneficial to Apple to present acoustic
specs even if they have the usual disclaimers, i.e. average, 100% cpu,
50% load, idle but not sleeping. Hard drive noise depends on how the
HD is mounted in a case, at least a desktop computer only depends on
the surface it is sitting on and items around it.
