I apologize for flooding the forum with this issue since
many of you have no problem connecting a Mac to your OWA accounts. However,
since the MacBook Pro was just released this June and (from the number of
responses I received) there may be others who buy one along with a smartcard
reader and struggle to make the connection I thought I would update.
I followed through on suggestions from Fed-Talk users and downloaded
the Firmware flash package from SCM Microsystems for my ‘new’ SCR
3310 reader. Although the card reader showed no signs of life on the MacBook, I
was able to install it on a Dell laptop with WinXP and actually logged onto my network
with my CAC. My thoughts were since the card reader works on the PC, and the
MacBook OS 10.5.7 supposedly had current drivers for SCR 3310, the reader
probably didn’t have the firmware update for the Mac.
After I reconfigured the PC system for stand-alone I tried
to flash the firmware with the Mac version. The updater reported that it
couldn’t find any devices.
I contacted SCM support – they asked for the part
number, which I supplied. I then received this email:
“Dear Mr. Roddy,
P/N 904657 definitely belongs to a
Siemens Wavebox reader, a reader that identifies itself with a different
product id than the standard ones and thus, our tools can not be used with
it. Sorry, but you'd either have to contact your reseller for the appropriate
software or you'd have to talk to Siemens.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards

I had trouble believing that since I
just purchased this reader last week from Prime Electronic Component, New
Jersey, USA. The label on the underside of the reader states:
SCR3310 SmartOS powered
s/n 2112028205366 p/n: 904657
Made in Singapore by SCM Microsystems
I’m now going back to the company
I bought the SCR 3310 from and asking for a replacement.
