Codeweavers' Wine has been around for many years to enable Windows apps to
run on linux, so the company has considerable history in this kind of
development and support. Wine is the free companion to CrossOver (CX), and
had a pretty good reputation in the linux community prior to the extensive
use of virtual environments. I haven't used it since.

The list of Windows applications that will run in CX is fairly long, albeit
many of the titles are for games.

If I didn't already have a considerable collection of VMware, I would test
and compare CX to Fusion and Parallels.
One advantage of CX over the VM utilities is that it takes up much less
drive space than a whole installation of Windows or linux in a virtual
environment. This is perhaps not too big an issue any more with the cost of
large drives, but having an virtual XP and a virtual linux on a 1yr old
laptop drive can eat up available space very quickly.
