Its not embedded objs that we have issue with. Its ppt vector drawings that cause the bad PDFs to be generated.
Embedded images work fine when printing to PDF

Office 08 is not much better than its predecessor at handling embedded
objects within PowerPoint. Unfortunately, that has become a way of life
for my project.
But -fortunately- NeoOffice works just fine with embedded objects inside
PowerPoint .ppt/.pptx presentations. And the price is right (even if
the user interface is ugly.) I'd suggest everyone download NeoOffice
and keep it around for MS Office files that MS Office barfs on. (It's
truly amazing how Microsoft can't get things to work with their source
code, when the reverse/sideways engineered open source project works
just fine...)
