The bad things:

• MS Word is very unstable on large (100+ page word documents)
using the .doc file format. it can be easily crashed if a user uses
page up/page down or scroll bar to rapidly scroll through the
document. It appears to be worse if track changes are on and show
comments/insert&deletes are being displayed. words crashes at least
a couple times a day.

With regard to number 2, this instability has long plagued Windows.
When I used Windows years ago, it "ate" my dissertation ... twice! it
was at that time that a fellow graduate student introduced to me to
the joy that is LaTeX. Granted, it's not for everyone and there is a
not too steep learning curve. There are plenty of books and discussion
groups on the Internet where beginners can get lots of help.
The input file for LaTeX is a simple ASCII file that produces a
beautifully typeset document. Of course some tweaking will be
inevitable and in certain circumstances that tweaking may require a
bit more expertise than you possess.
LaTeX can produce postscript and pdf files as well. The commercial
implementation of TeX/LaTeX is the program Scientific Word. If you
type of a lot of technical documents (i.e., lots of math and
graphics), then TeX/LaTeX or SW is worth a look.
Finally, as some or many of you may know, downloading and installing
TeX/LaTeX is free. For Macs, see this page to get started:

Best,
Richard
