Hi all,
The Eikon To Go is a USB biometric device manufactured by Upek that purportedly works on the Mac and is resold by the Apple Store. It’s a great little device for people like me who are paranoid about shoulder surfing. Unfortunately the Eikon Digital Privacy
software that ships with the device does not appear to work on the Air.
We installed it to two Air laptops (one SATA, one SSD) and found that we could not authenticate after restart with any of the stored credentials. The glad path to recovery was to boot into single-user mode and use the developer’s uninstaller to remove
the application. We find it interesting that this problem and solution (without the Air identifier) are prominently displayed on upek’s Technical Support page at
http://upek.com/support/customersupport/techsupport/Topic.asp?ID_Topic=67
so my guess is that they are getting a significant number of reports of the problem. Upek does not include any troubleshooting information or even their URL in their included manual. We did also install it to a MacBook and it behaved as expected. It’ll be a
great little device when it works for all Mac models.
I know Apple watches this list. I believe Apple should attempt to replicate these findings and then either warn users or withdraw the product until the problem is fixed. While most of the people on this list would not have problems following upek’s technote,
a lot of users would be dead in the water. If anyone from Apple wishes to send me direct email I will provide the serial numbers of the machines we tried it on.
I will also send a copy of this email to the developer.
