It's got to do with your DNS search path. You may be pulling a search
path from DHCP, or it may be assigned manually.
Try
more /etc/resolv.conf
from terminal on both systems, and see how the "search" line differs.
If the Mac doesn't have one, or it is different, copy whatever the
linux box has into System Prefs > Network > Search Domains:

I haven't had a problem typing the fully qualified domain name until
now. There is a server only accessible from the inside, so I'm
wondering how to get to it.
Typing smb://XXX/share123/ into a linux box (not on the domain either)
works. But it won't from the mac. Any ideas?
