CFNetwork on behalf of Mail, rather than Mail directly, would actually be the component that performs the X.509-based authentication to the Web Services. This functionality has been taking place for quite sometime. That is also why systems were able to authenticate to OWA originally as well.

That would be a good alternative. Entourage is on a long walk off a short pier… to be replaced by Outlook Mac. Might be a good time to think about a switch. Apple Mail is much more powerful although I am not well versed in its connectivity to Exchange 2007 yet. We are still on 2003 (sigh).
AFAIK Mail doesn't grok PKI authentication. -- Tim
