Be aware that the appropriate support (Tokend) for the emerging CAC-NG (Dual Applet -- CACv2 & PIV) is not yet available for Mac OS X 10.5 / 10.6. These cards have been under development within DoD and are beginning to be issued within DoD. Note that they are neither like the CAC nor like the PIV in that they are 144K in size and contain Dual Applets (CACv2 & PIVTrans).
This support will be available as part of Apple's ongoing efforts under the SmartCardServices Project hosted on MacOSForge.org [1] along with discussions and announcements on the associated Mailing Lists [2]. This is the single instance for all the Smart Card Services components, updates, patches, etc. that were in previous releases of Mac OS X (starting with 10.5.6) and that will go into future releases of Mac OS X. All Smart Card related questions and discussion should shift to those mailing lists.
___
Anyone that possesses one of these newer cards known by several different names to different people... like "CAC-NG", "144K CAC", etc. , please contact us [3] to get early access to the Tokend for Leopard / Snow Leopard. When the work is complete, two additional Tokend modules ( for a) Leopard & b) Snow Leopard) will be made publicly available from the project's installers page [4] prior to their inclusion in a future Mac OS X release.

My involvement on answering questions and providing assistance on this Fed-Talk list relating to Smart Cards (CAC/PIV/CAC-NG/...) and PKI in general will continue to reduce to transition all my available resources towards this Project. Please direct any of your questions onto the appropriate list Project [2].
