We use a two node load balancer running RedHat Pirahna. Pirahna hands
off traffic to other nodes that handle the particular web site. In our
case we have four web servers for one site. These can be any os and
web server combo. This allows us to to bring down any one of our
servers for maintenance without bringing down the site. The negative;
Pirahna does not handle geographically separate servers on different
subnets. Supposedly, RHEL 6 will be able to do this. Another open
source project to consider is haproxy, http://haproxy.1wt.eu/ .

Hi All:
We are looking for information/suggestion/pointers to setting up a
"fault-tolerant system" for our web services, that would be able to
switch which computer the server goes to in case one server goes
down. Mirroring the content is not the issue, just the best way to
set up a system so that if the request
http://our.address/get.some.data
comes in if the main machine for our.address is not working it will
go to a secondary machine.
Also, does anyone have any experiences with proxying services like
Squid, and or there other ones people recommend.
Thanks,
-Roy
