I use a BookEndz dock for my MacBook Pro. It plugs in and duplicates the
ports on both sides of the laptop, plus an additional VGA connector (though
you can't use both the DVI and VGA at the same time). I use the DVI to
connect to a Dell monitor. It provides the same number of USB and FireWire
ports as the MacBook; having a built-in USB hub to provide extra ports would
have been a nice addition.
It's the same as connecting devices to the built-in ports; the docking
station basically provides a bit extra convenience of not having to connect
and disconnect several cables whenever the laptop leaves the desk. I'm not
sure there's any real security benefit.
