Thought some of you who must commute to work might benefit from this or know someone who does. The Army is reimbursing folks who take mass transportation to work. Summary:
The Mass Transportation Benefit Program (MTBP) provides non-taxable personnel benefit of up to $230 per month for mass transit commuting costs “in order to reduce federal employees’ contribution to traffic congestion and air pollution and to expand their commuting alternatives” (Executive Order 13150, April 2000). MTBP is available for all Army employees – Active Duty Army, Army Reserve, Army National Guard military currently on active duty status, DA Federal civilian employees, and DA Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) NAF employees.
Qualified Means of transportation: Commuter Bus, Commuter Train, Subway / Light Rail, Van Pools.
Interested employees must submit a completed and signed “Mass Transportation Benefit Program Application” and “Commuter Expenses Calculation Worksheet” to the MTBP POC for processing.
The POC approves applications and submits them to DOT between the 20th and 25th of each month.
Eligible MTBP participants receive a subsidy for their commuting expenses while using Qualified Means of Transportation As of 1 March 2009 the maximum allowable benefit is $230 per month.
All of the info and forms are here (check with your local Financial Management Division for local POCs)::

While you're at it, send good thoughts my way. I've had to face the fact that I need to ride the "short bus" (take handicap bus transportation to and from work) and if that qualifies for tthis all of my expenses would be covered! :O) So be sure to pass it on to any disabled folks you know in the same situation. I'll let you know what the results are for me.
