I agree with nearly everything in your post, but I just wanted to mention something about this point:
At the time Microsoft made this $150M investment, Apple had, if I remember correctly, over $2B in cash on hand, so this "investment" was largely symbolic. It was certainly important for that and other reasons at the time, but Apple didn't need the cash.
