FYI
For Mac OS X 10.5, the Army Golden Master AGM9 specifies using Thursby ADmitMac for CAC in the workplace. It's the approved standard.
Mac OS X 10.6 is not officially approved by the Army at this time. AGM10, around 10.6, is a work in progress.
ADmitMac solves the issue of CAC cards/Active Directory/DFS/Network volume connections but certain items mentioned in these posts really relate to functionality in Mac mail clients, browsers and ability to interact with MS Office.
These are issues for any non-Windows client such as a Linux desktop since there are always two steps in interoperability - first infrastructure - can I log in, can I see network drives etc, and then secondarily how do I work with Exchange, files from MS Office, or Visio, or interact with sites written using Active X, how do I work with Citrix etc.
Thursby ADmitMac for PKI solves CAC cards/Active Directory/DFS/Network volumes for 10.5 and 10.6 for infrastructural connections but the end-to-end picture is one of many players.
It's a fairly well worn path for Linux desktops in the commercial world but still a work in progress for Macs in the PC enterprise.

Thanks to everyone's suggestions on how best to deal with this problem. This
may work out to be the best thing that has happened to us. Will post more
latter as plans develop.
Thanks again and it is still Hot in Huntsville. Broke an all time high
record for one day this week. It was 103..
