I unfortunately am not providing you a resolution to your problem here, but wanted to point out that when connecting _from_ Mac OS X to mount a volume using smb/cifs, Samba is not what is used but rather smbfs. Samba is used for providing file sharing _from_ Mac OS X using smb/cifs.
Mac OS X: - Accessing Remote Fileshare using smb/cifs Mac OS X Client (smbfs) ---> (smb/cifs) ---> Fileserver
Mac OS X: - Share files and folders using SMB (WIndows) Remote Client ---> (smb/cifs) ---> Mac OS X Client (samba)
This may help you do some further troubleshooting.
