- Thread-topic: I got a problem - But it's Friday
I agree with your thought but I plan on keeping a mobile me account. To me
the ideal thing would be not to require Your Apple ID be a email address.
Apple rep said it didn't have to be an email address but when I tried just a
name it told me it is not a valid email address.
Thanks for the suggestions from everyone. I am making progress on this
problem. I got it working now but got to figure out how I did that.

I wouldn't use mobileme for your apple id just in case you decide to cancel
mobileme sometime in the future. As other services begin to offer what
MobileMe offers you may decide you do not want to pay the $99 per year
anymore...
I would recommend a gmail account, or even make your own domain name. I
made my Apple ID my own email and domain name (email@hidden). I
own the domain and I know the only way it will go away is if I die, in which
case no more purchases will be made anyhow.
If google ever decides to remove gmail (like mac.com was superseded by
me.com) you will be safe and not have to re-assign it again. I got feeling
bobblankenship.com is probably available :) You could set it up to forward
to your mobileme account so communication goes through mobile me, but if you
ever change, you just change a forwarding rule as opposed to a whole ID.
If you are absolutely SET on using your mobileme account and want to use it
for your apple ID, just log in to itunes and click "I forgot my password",
use your mobile me account it says is already in use, and then when it sends
the password reset link, just change the password to what you want (it will
send it to your mobile me since it is already established)... obviously
another person cannot have the same apple id, and you are the one who will
get the confirmation in the email.
In essence you are taking your name back from whoever had it before... the
side bonus would be you can go in to past purchases and maybe get a bunch of
apps that were purchased in the past :)

After next week I will not longer have a Comcast email address which is my
Apple ID. I went to the Apple store to change my Apple ID to my Mobile Me
address which I have had for about a year. It tells me that that address has
already been used and to use a different address. --- Well yes that is my
mobile Me email.
Spent 45 minutes on the phone with a Apple support rep and she was a waste
of time. She told me to go get a G mail account and use that. I am paying
for Mobile Me email and want to use it. Turns out that the Mobile Me address
is also considered an Apple ID account. She told me your Apple ID did not
have to be a email address so tried my user name (QTVRBOB) system said it
was not a valid email address.
Anyone else run into this and have a solution? Would be great if I could
merge the two accounts so all my purchases would show up under my Mobile Me
account. Surely someone else has run into this before?
Thanks & MERRY CHRISTMAS
Bob Blankenship
