That's strange. I've been using my MobileMe account for iTunes purchases
since it was "iTools" (the free precursor to .Mac and MobileMe) Maybe
you can't use new MobileMe accounts that only have the @me.com address.
@mac.com addresses seem to work fine.
Though the information about merging iTunes accounts is correct. I just
went through and reset the email addresses to current addresses and made
sure that I set the passwords. According to iTunes support there is no
problem having multiple accounts authorized to play music so that
shouldn't be a problem.
It's frustrating though there should be some way for them to confirm the
owner of the account and merge them...

Afer a few more hours last night with Apple support on why I can't use
my mobile me ID for iTunes store purchases or why they can't merge my
two accounts this is what I have learned.
You cannot use a mobile me ID for iTunes purchases and they will not
merge your two accounts even if all the billing information and street
address's are the same.
At one point in this effort I thought I had got iTunes to accept my
Mobile me account and the support guy wanted to know how I did it
because several of the Apple support folks have the same problem and
they have not been able to figure out a way to use Mobile Me ID for
iTunes. Turns out I had entered email@hidden instead of email@hidden
and that is why iTunes accepted the new email address and he didn't
catch it while I was making changes.
At one point they had me delete my Mobile Me account on the idea that
when iTunes checked for that ID it would not find it and would accept
the Mobile Me ID. That will not work either then spent more time getting
someone to reactivate my Mobile Me account. Accually had a 3 way call
going with the support guy and the folks that manage the iTunes database
and thjat is where I learned they will not merage accounts no matter
what. All my last two years purchases are tied to my Comcast ID and I
can not get to them from another account.
So tonight I will go get a gmail account so I can change my comcast ID
to a gmail.
I am not charging for this information and if someone can prove I am
wrong about this let me be the first to know.
Bob
