Perhaps Apple is doing two things on the
camera (or lack thereof) and other issues that people think the product
is "lacking." First, Apple likely has a product roadmap
where the inclusion of many new features are planned depending on any number
of factors. If Apple put everything in Gen 1 of the product, it would
have a difficult time getting you to upgrade. And hey, they want
to sell more iPads. I would hold a few things back to spur later
upgrades if I were Apple, wouldn't you?
Second, I suspect Apple wants to really
focus this product right now on what Steve views as core functionality:
periodicals and books. Yes, it does the other stuff. And
yes Apple touts that. But they are really trying to build a new market
with this product where one doesn't really exist, in the electronic periodical
market and the e-book expansion. Additionally, if you put too many
things into the mix, the product loses its identity and it becomes harder
to sell, not easier. Remember, the iPod was sold as a music player.
But in subsequent generations, it became so much more. Focus
on core competencies then expand into other areas.
I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that the
above issues have affected product features. I also bet that you
will see these features eventually. But cameras won't be in Gen 1.
Anyone want to make a bet on that? ;-)

I find it questionable that "Mission Repair" could report this
openly without serious repercussions. I am certain Apple has tested versions
with a front-side camera, and I am fairly confident that Apple will ship
a version with one at some point (maybe even in March). But I can't believe
that people receiving data about or parts for the iPad aren't under NDA.
