I would think that you'd plug the card adapter into the device, and whatever software is running has the ability to use the certificate stuff.
But, on the other hand, lets be honest, I doubt we'll EVER see this capability in the device.
The other way to think of doing it would be to import the key off the card and use a pin or a password to access the cert.

The more difficult part is the 2nd aspect of Dave’s response. Having the full certificate/PKI framework is a requirement...
What about an adapter that plugs into the 30 pin ipod connector, like the other adapters that Apple is putting out?
