"Fed-Talk is an unmoderated discussion list to discuss the uses of
existing Apple technologies within, and specific to the Federal
government."
Can we move on to discussion of the tablet computer which was just
announced?

No, they haven't missed anything.
We start with the gold master, but have to add (Cyberlink Power DVD) for
the
users to have DVD playback capability.
JIM CAN YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE PLEASE CONFIRM MY STATEMENT BELOW?
Don't really want to believe this but think I have got to the root of
the
problem. According to our Help Desk the copy of Cyberlink Power DVD is
only
licensed to be installed on Dell systems and will not work on any other
brand
so end users running any other brand of PC will have to purchase
Cyberlink
Power DVD or the decoder for WMP. I am surprised that the Vista
configuration
they are pushing out will not play a DVD without additional software or
a
decoder.
Someone else asked if my laptop would play a purchased DVD and I brought
Nemo from home but no luck.
I originally wrote:
Our base is upgrading to VISTA and now customers are telling me our DVDs
we
produce will not play on their systems. Sure enough I tried one of our
disk
we produced and it would not play. This is the message I got.
"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD
decoder
is not installed on your computer."
Followed the link to Microsoft's web site and found this message:
"DVD Playback Options for Windows
If you are running the Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Business,
Windows Vista Enterprise, or Windows XP operating system on your
computer,
you might need to install a compatible DVD decoder (also known as a
MPEG-2
decoder) before continuing with the following activities.
Playing a DVD
Playing a recorded TV show
Playing video files that were encoded with the MPEG-2 codec (.mpeg,
.mpg,
and some .avi files) To purchase a compatible DVD decoder, visit
Plug-ins
for Windows Media Player."
So is the MPEG decoder not included in the Army's Gold master or is our
NEC
folks missing something.
Thanks
