One problem is that *everything* shown had been already leaked, and a few things that had been hoped for were not there. The iPhone was completely new and pretty much a complete surprise. The iPhone was a revolution. The iPad is largely an evolution (although still impressive, including the fact that it costs less than the Nexus One Phone!)

The current iPhone is pretty old hardware wise. It had two speed bumps since it was introduced 3 years ago -- the first to add 3G to the phone (which I've turned off because of the crappy AT&T network), and then the CPU speed bump with the 3GS. Apple is due for some major hardware upgrades. Also, it has been largely rumored that Apple has been holding back some OS updates for the iPhone because it would give away too many details about what is in the iPad.
During the financial call on Monday Timothy Cook said "We could have sold a lot more [iPhones] and elected not to because we are managing inventories very tightly." Why would they choose not to? My guess is that they have new hardware in the pipeline and didn't want to be stuck with unsold inventory. I bet you will see new phones with higher resolution OLED screens and maybe multiple carriers within a month. The ability to run current iPhone applications at different resolutions (as demonstrated in today's iPad presentation) is key to making a smooth transition to a higher resolution iPhone display. You don't want to break all the current apps when they are displayed on a higher resolution iPhone.
