...and just to be painfully clear, the iPhone 3G/3GS can get a GPS fix *without* the presence of the cell network or Wi-Fi.

I understand we haven't seen iPad yet, but since the iPhone 3G/3GS and iPad (Wi-Fi+3G) specs in relation to the wireless and location services are identical, and both use AT&T's wireless network in the US, it would stand to reason that the A-GPS and 3G chipset implementation between iPhone 3G/3GS and iPad (Wi-Fi+3G) is similar.
