Greetings William,
I see you don't feel my pain. Ouch. If only the NGEN guys would bother to ask us humble Mac developers and users what we would like. But, the closest thing we have is MS Entourage Web Services in MS Office for Mac 2008 (Business edition). It works with NMCI, but it would be nice if NGEN would learn that Mac is not a legacy product or a second class bastard child.
But what do I know.

Instructed my Army Homepage team to publish a full how-to setup for AKO using IMAP and POP around 2002/3 complete with step by step screen snapshots. Did for both Outlook and Apple Mail.
When I got my iPhone, I immediately set it up. iPad, same.
AKO has the most robust, reliable, cost effective, secure email system in government (in my humble opinion :-) ). An amazing success story for Army CIO G6. A testimony to both standards and standards based software and a handful of very dedicated AKO team players, Army and Contractor alike.
(sorry, cannot resist giving props to Army for that win. Jim and Shannon from Cherry Road do a bang up job!)
Best,

You can also set auto forwarding to other .mil email address's. I use it for mobile govt email since the my Navy NMCI (via EDS corp) email is too retarded to do the same. I am getting an iPad in July so i'll have it on there too!
