Absolutely -- I'm not saying that it'd break spec for an MUA to allow association, just that in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's a high-priority for most MUA authors, because it's not required (SHOULD, not MUST), because it's not a high-occurence use case, and because the end solution (using the same email address as is encoded in your PKI certs) is generally a very, very easy thing to do.
