We're investigating the potential to use the combined gyro, fluxgate compass, accelerometer and assisted GPS to accurately track responders in 3D in poor GPS environments such as high rise buildings in large cities. The building blocks Apple has integrated into the phone appear to be essentially the same as Raytheon's MEMS-based inertial guidance system, but without the navigational smarts.
If anyone has a lead on a team or company making progress with using the iPhone for precision 3D locating, we'd sure appreciate a heads-up.
Combined with available Bluetooth-linked life sign monitors, effective yet affordable multifunction 'officer in distress' tools might be developed. Local budgets are so tough now few departments can afford discrete devices, but all can afford cellphones with extended capabilities.
It's lunchtime and that Greek restaurant sure sounds good!
Thanks,
Marc
