Count me among those who would love to see some sort of FaceTime - iChat integration, even though I'll likely be waiting until iPhone 5 since my 3GS contract doesn't expire until next year.
But having thought about it, I don't think we'll see it from Apple. To date, Apple has not provided any sort of iChat integration with the iPhone. However, AOL does via the AIM network and their iPhone AIM client, and it can also be done via Jabber/XMPP. So in my ideal would, AOL would add video chat capability to their iPhone AIM client, and it would be interoperable with both iChat and AOL's Windows AIM client.
Also, the current FaceTime concept of pushing the voice over a standard voice call wouldn't interoperate well with pure-data clients like iChat. Though I could see companies like Skype, which do interface with the PSTN, adding FaceTime to their desktop clients to allow FaceTime video calls between iPhone 4 and Skype desktop apps that would seem no different to iPhone users than making a FaceTime call to another iPhone.

iFixit has the relevant teardowns, and speculates at <http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad-Wi-Fi-Teardown/2183/4#s11207> that the spot many thought may be for a camera was really just an ambient light sensor all along.
So perhaps it's a but overzealous to say there's "a place for it", but Apple was indeed hiring a camera engineer for iPad: <http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?method=mExternal.showJob&RID=47818>.
Could this simply be related to software and things like the Camera Connection Kit? Perhaps. But it seems a given that a future iteration of the iPad hardware will contain a front-facing camera, given things previously discovered in iOS 3.2.x, a version of iOS which only runs on iPad.

<http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/29/apple-was-working-on-video-conferencing-in-ipad/>
Logic would also seem to bear this out, given how perfect an application this would be for iPad. Obviously, Apple hasn't always done things we think they should, but what's more likely is that Apple wants all the software pieces in place for this before they release companion hardware.
What will be more interesting to be is how far beyond iPhone 4 Apple itself will take FaceTime. It will indeed be a standard anyone can use, but will iChat also support FaceTime, allowing for computer-to-iPhone 4 video calls? Apple wants everything to be easy, and Jobs noted it's "as simple as making a phone call", and specifically dismissed the notion of needing to have buddy lists or presence detection. Perhaps that's the *easiest* iteration, but it should would be nice to have FaceTime (or some videoconferencing capability) go beyond just phone-to-phone...
