Every phone can track you. This is not news. What is news is that
Apple is storing the db, which I've heard they've fixed in an upcoming
release already.
The phone stores the db in /root on the device, which is inaccessible
by other software. Meaning that you can't hack safari (like a
jailbreak) and get access to it. Meaning you have to have physical
access to the phone. I.e., you can't remote hack the phone to get it.
Its more of a threat on iTunes, which is countered by encrypting the
backup. However, the db is much easier to obtain there through lots of
different means. But, like I said, rumor is that Apple has already
fixed this in an upcoming release.
The fact that Apple collects this information is not news, it's right
in the privacy policy that they do.
I am betting that people are looking into Android for similar, right now.
If you call 911 from a cell phone, they need to be able to locate you.
That's the main reason, yes there are a ton of other reasons, but
that's the main one.
I believe this has received too much over hyped press just trying to
find something to bitch about in Apple's success. The fact is that
almost every phone can, and does, track you. Apple just stores it for
updating it's wireless access point db, btw, in which no pii is
transmitted.
