To be clear, support for legacy (inescure) AFP authentication mechanisms has been deprecated in Lion, so Lion clients cannot connect to servers using these insecure mechanisms by default. They can be re-enabled via:

Perhaps you're thinking of SMB? That's indeed sorta gone away and Apple's rolling their own in Lion. AFP has also been updated and it can present some compatibility issues with 3rd parties that support AFP (various NAS boxes come to mind).
