I've had a similar problem under 10.4 (PPC), 10.5 (x86), and 10.6 (x86) clients. Not one of them had Thursby SW installed. Don't remember if all of them did but I'm sure the ones that had FileVault enabled had the issue.
My symptom was a failure to login error message that took a fair amount of time to show up. Removing the CAC and trying again always cleared it. Rebooting with the CAC in never worked, only if the CAC was removed I could login,I don't recall if only coming from sleep or screen locks resulted in the problem.

This account is an OS X Server account, which basically means everything's local on the laptop and duplicated in background with my OS X Server. The console log showed an error within an Apple OS X (Snow Leopard) process, but I realized that I had my CAC Card plugged into the CAC reader. When I pulled the CAC card out of the reader and rebooted, i was able to log on normally
