Random thought/comment.
I saw an article today that some people are still experiencing fast batter drains on their phones. I haven't been following the battery story very closely (I still have a iPhone 3G), but I've had to debug enough incidents in my life to know that problems that manifest at one place and point in time may have actually originated at some seemingly unrelated place and time. Linking the original cause of the problem to the actual observation of a problem can often take lots and lots of data collected over many many incidents.
Now I am not trying to justify what Carrier IQ did ...
But... as someone tasked with solving technical and often mysterious problems, I always like to have lots and lots of data. Engineers somewhere along the line probably thought, "the more hooks to collect data to help debugging, the better."
My concern isn't that they did this (heck, I have detailed audit trails turned on for my machines, and I encourage everyone to do it too:), but *why* they did it, *who* had access to the data, and *how* access to the data was controlled should be answered. In short, I want an audit of the auditors.
