Erik et al.,
Please do not install nor suggest to install the beta 0.95 noted specifically for 10.6 to be installed on OS X Lion. That was actually superseded by the one shipped in 10.6.7 with minor changes.
Yes, the Installer refused to install because it was locked to only install on top of 10.6.x and there are reasons for this. Tearing apart installers and laying pieces down on a system is not wise unless you are just testing on a test machine.
Please stay tuned for a Lion specific installer rather than playing russian roulette.
