For what it's worth, SCM SCR331 USB reader stopped forking for me after 10.6.8 update.

I've used the following with my MacBook Pro:
SCM SCR331 USB
SCM SCR3500 USB "SmartFold"
ActivCard USB v2.0 with SCM SCR331 firmware update
In general though, pretty much any CCID-compliant USB reader will work. This
