Subject: Re: [Fed-Talk] government agencies using iOS devices?
NASA has iPhones (3GS& 4, on Verizon& AT&T) and iPads (v1, w/3G option) available to our employees via our standard "desktop" contract (ODIN). I expect we'll be updating our guidance in the next few months based on our emerging experiences. I also expect that we'll be keeping the devices available.
NASA has developed some iOS apps, for internal and external use. Internal examples include a directory lookup app, and a civil servant timecard app. There are a variety of additional apps in various stages across a variety of groups. Enough that we have a structured process for issuing "NASA" apps.
Prior to our formal iPad adoption, several sites had some pilot activities, including mine. Folks needing primarily an ultra-portable email/calendar/web browser were our biggest success stories. Our engineers didn't have enough of the right app mix for their needs, and ditto on the science side.
DISA had a draft STIG on iPhone/iPads, though I can't find it on the authoritative site, so it may have been pulled. The version from 20100921 indicated:
Note 1: The use of Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch) in the DoD has not been approved. These
devices should not be connected to production networks or email systems during testing.
Note2: DoD's risk assessment of iOS devices, when configured according to this draft STIG, has not yet been
completed. Readers should be aware that it is likely that the risk assessment will result in changes to one
or more policy or technical security controls defined in this draft STIG.
For those keeping OS score, we also support Blackberries. Android devices are not yet officially approved, though we're tracking ongoing developments and I expect we'll have both phones and tablets approved in some of value of "soonish."

Just an informal poll,
Is anyone out there working in a federal agency that has approved iOS devices for network use?
If so, what organization you work for?
We're doing modeling and simulation work on the iPad, but everything is off-network as iOS is not approved here.
